Round Rock Parks and Recreation Department was awarded the National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation. The NRPA Gold Medal Award is the highest national honor in the park and recreation industry. \n\nThe History of Juneteenth\nJuneteenth is now recognized as a National Holiday.Importantly\, it is the oldest known celebration of slavery’s emancipation in Texas.Traditionally\, the celebration occurs on June 19th.On that day in 1865\, Union troops informed Texans that slavery had ended.Although the Emancipation Proclamation began in 1863\, Texas saw little immediate change.Consequently\, freedom did not reach many Texans until 1865. \nToday\, Juneteenth celebrates African American freedom.At the same time\, it encourages self-development and respect for all cultures. \n
