Dust off your apron and grab your piping bag because That Takes the Cake Sugar Art Show & Cake Competition is returning to the Round Rock Sports Center on March 31- April 2nd, 2023. This 18th annual event hosted by Capital Confectioners invites sugar artists and bakers from around the world to display their impressive sweet creations and share baking wisdom with attendees. You will be blown away by the designs and techniques of pastry chefs, baking enthusiasts, sugar artists, and kids alike. Here are the top 5 things to do at the competition that will be the “icing on the cake” to your visit!
Janett Spivey, President of Capital Confectioners – the local club that hosts the event – said, “We are excited to be back in person at the Round Rock Sports Center to celebrate international holidays with sugar artists from all over the world. This year we are also paying tribute to a legend in our industry, Nicholas Lodge, who sadly passed away in 2022. Nicholas was a mainstay of cake shows across the globe and was often seen on Food Network, as well. ”
In addition to this special tribute, there will be classes available to suit every skill level and price range, Spivey said. “We’ve got kid’s classes, beginner-level classes for those who want to try something new all the way through to our day-long or multi-day classes before and after the show.”
International cookie artist Julia Usher will return with the Julia M. Usher’s Cookie Art Competition™, and joining us from South Africa is renowned sugar artist Dorothy Klerck, along with Italy’s Margherita Ferrara and Laura Saporiti, and Jacqui Kelly from the UK. “Of course, from North America, we will have dozens of other incredible, internationally known instructors,” Spivey said. “We’re so pleased to attract such an elite group of instructors to teach classes and help us judge our internationally recognized competition.”
The competition accepts entries from anyone – ranging from kids and beginners through to the top sugar artists in the Masters division – as long as they all pre-register by the end of March 26, 2023 at https://thattakesthecake.org/competition/cake-competition/ . Entrants can compete in a variety of cake and cookie decorating styles that are made to be seen but not eaten, or in the Tasting competition, which is judged on taste above aesthetics.
“This year’s tasting competition will have judges from both Austin Community College and from Auguste Escoffier School of Culinary Arts,” Spivey said. “We’re extremely privileged to have such outstanding judges.”
