What Are Purple Martin Parties?

Purple Martins are North America’s largest swallows. During early summer, they begin gathering by the thousands after their young leave the nest. Soon afterward, they prepare for their long migration to South America, where they spend the winter.

Before settling into their nighttime roost, the birds spend the evening catching insects. Then, just before sunset, they perform an incredible aerial display as they swirl together before landing in nearby trees.
