En garde! Watch out, Round Rock: November 21st and 22nd is bringing a wave of more than 300 fencers to the Sports Capital of Texas! The Austin Fencers Club will host Central Texas’ largest regional fencing competition in Round Rock: the 2015 Austin Challenge and Poujardieo Memorial. The event, which will feature 28 fencing events, will be held at the Round Rock Sports Center and is free and open to the public.
The sport of fencing, which is often described as a game of “physical chess,” features three weapons: epee, foil and saber. Spectators get to witness different formats and techniques for each weapon from the sword-wheeling rooks, bishops and knights. The Austin Challenge serves as a qualification path for USA Fencing’s National Championships, the largest fencing tournament in the world, which will take place in Dallas in June and July 2016. Fencers from all over Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana will converge at the Austin Challenge to duel for the gold and for the chance to win their berth in the National Championships. Come out and see these athletes on their road to the top!
